Mali: government announces €3 million bounty for top jihadist leader

The Malian government has declared an unprecedented reward of two billion CFA francs, equivalent to approximately three million euros, for actionable intelligence leading to the apprehension or elimination of Iyad Ag Ghaly. Ghaly, who leads the Al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), is a primary target as the nation grapples with a severely deteriorating security landscape.

Iyad Ag Ghaly: the Sahel’s most wanted figure

Through a statement broadcast on national television, the Malian government confirmed the substantial bounty of two billion CFA francs, roughly three million euros, for any credible and actionable details pertaining to Iyad Ag Ghaly. This former Touareg rebel commander, now at the helm of JNIM, is widely recognized as a pivotal figure orchestrating the jihadist insurgency that has plagued the Sahel region for over a decade. He faces sanctions from the United Nations, is actively sought by the United States, and is subject to an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Other armed leaders targeted

In addition to Ghaly, the Malian regime has placed bounties on six other prominent armed leaders. This list includes Amadou Kouffa, another influential operative within JNIM, alongside Alghabass Ag Intalla and Bilal Ag Cherif, who lead the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA). According to official statements from Bamako, these individuals are suspected of complicity in planning and executing terrorist assaults against the Malian state.

A direct response to escalating violence

This significant announcement follows coordinated assaults launched in late April by JNIM and its FLA allies, targeting several key Malian army installations. These aggressive offensives represented a critical escalation in the ongoing conflict, tragically resulting in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a central figure within the military government.
