Mali joins global summit to shape the future of higher education

The future of higher education took center stage on June 6, 2026, at the Global Summit on the Future of Higher Education, hosted at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China. Among the key participants was Mali, represented by Dr. Mamadou Koumaré, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako and coordinator of the partnership between the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) and Malian higher education institutions.

The event brought together leaders from academia, government, international organizations, and cutting-edge technology firms to explore how education and industry can collaborate to build a new ecosystem of skill development and talent cultivation.

redefining higher education for the digital age

The discussions focused on transforming higher education through strategic partnerships with the tech industry, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and its sector-specific applications. Key areas highlighted included:

  • Innovative training programs designed to enhance AI skills across sectors such as agriculture, commerce, education, and natural sciences;
  • Showcasing best practices from the tech sector to inspire new initiatives in higher education;
  • Strengthening the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) by publishing a comprehensive report and fostering a collaborative ecosystem among partners.

The summit served as a platform for Malian universities to reinforce their commitment to digital transformation. Three Malian institutions—the Kurukanfuga University of Bamako, the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako, and the University Pedagogy Institute—have already formalized partnerships with UNESCO-ICHEI to advance AI integration in education. Dr. Koumaré leads the IIOE, which unites these institutions under a shared vision of educational innovation.

bridging academia and industry for lifelong learning

A major outcome of the summit was the promotion of a collaborative talent development model driven by AI, encouraging stakeholders to rethink curriculum design, practical skill-building, and continuous learning opportunities. The goal is to align educational systems with the evolving demands of the modern workforce.

UNESCO has pledged continued support to Mali’s higher education sector, focusing on strengthening human, technical, and technological capacities to ensure sustainable progress.
