Since its historic reintegration into the African Union in 2017, the Kingdom of Morocco has systematically expanded its strategic footprint within the continental body. Following extensive regional consultations across North Africa, Moroccan officials secured leadership roles in multiple key organs of the organization. This evolution reflects not only the growing prominence of Rabat in continental governance but also its unwavering commitment to advancing the Union’s core priorities—from institutional reforms and transparent governance to financial sustainability, economic integration, and tackling development challenges.
nine strategic leadership positions secured
The Moroccan delegation has been entrusted with nine high-level positions, placing the country at the forefront of its subregion in terms of elective roles. Among these responsibilities, Morocco will serve as Vice President of the Ministerial Committee on African Candidacies within the international system, overseeing nominations for key positions. Additionally, it will hold the Vice Chairmanship of the Contributions Committee, a pivotal body responsible for assessing and approving member states’ financial contributions to the Union.
In specialized technical committees—where policies are shaped and implemented—the Kingdom will participate in the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, as well as the Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry, and Mining Committee. Morocco will also take on the Vice Chairmanship of the Bureau of Permanent Representatives for institutional reforms and lead the Subcommittee on Environmental Issues. Its engagement extends to the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance, further solidifying its role in advancing shared continental values.

Beyond institutional leadership, Morocco’s influence is evident in its election to the Board of Directors of the African Centre for Migration Studies. This appointment enables Moroccan experts to actively contribute to continental migration governance. The move underscores the trust placed in the vision of King Mohammed VI, whose approach to migration emphasizes humanitarian responsibility, solidarity, and shared accountability. Through these nine strategic roles, Morocco is not only strengthening its voice within the Union but also demonstrating its capacity to drive meaningful change across diverse policy domains.

Morocco’s return to the African Union on 30 January 2017 during the Addis Ababa summit marked a definitive end to decades of absence—a withdrawal from the former Organisation of African Unity in 1984.
