Niamey, June 7, 2026 – Nigerien authorities have marked a significant step forward in their ongoing battle against illicit drug trafficking, overseeing the incineration of a substantial cocaine consignment. This large quantity of narcotics had been confiscated during various operations conducted across the nation. The destruction ceremony took place this Sunday at the Central Livestock Laboratory (LABOCEL), under the careful oversight of the National Commission for the Coordination of the Fight Against Drugs (CNCLD).

Over 319 kilograms of cocaine destroyed in Niamey
A total of 280 bricks of cocaine, weighing an impressive 319.745 kilograms, were officially destroyed. This significant haul resulted from two major interdictions: 47 bricks seized in Gaya, located in the Dosso region, on September 29, 2025, and a larger consignment of 233 bricks intercepted in Zinder on May 19, 2026.
Prior to their destruction, samples of the confiscated substance underwent rigorous analysis by agents from the Directorate of Technical and Scientific Police (DPTS). Laboratory tests conclusively confirmed the substance to be cocaine in its hydrochloride (HCL) form.

Drug destruction adhering to international management standards
During his address, Mai Moussa Elhadji Bashir, President of the CNCLD, emphasized that this operation fully complies with international requirements for managing seized narcotics. He clarified that authorities are mandated to destroy confiscated drugs within a reasonable timeframe. This proactive measure mitigates the inherent risks associated with prolonged storage, especially considering that judicial proceedings can often extend over several years.

High-level judicial and security mobilization
Presiding over the ceremony, Minister of Justice Alio Daouda meticulously observed each stage of the drug destruction. He was joined by numerous senior judicial and security officials, underscoring the gravity of the event. Among the distinguished attendees were the Public Prosecutor attached to the Niamey High Court, the Director of the Central Office for the Repression of Illicit Drug Trafficking (OCRTIS), the Director General of LABOCEL, and various representatives from the defense and security forces.
Ultimately, the incineration of over three hundred kilograms of cocaine vividly demonstrates the Nigerien authorities’ unwavering resolve to intensify their efforts against drug trafficking networks. This illicit trade continues to pose a formidable and growing challenge to the security and stability of the entire Sahel region.
