A military outpost near N’Guigmi, in southeastern Niger, came under a deadly attack by jihadist group Boko Haram on Friday, resulting in the loss of at least ten soldiers.
Attack targets garrison town in Diffa region
N’Guigmi, a fortified town in the Diffa region, has long been a flashpoint for insurgent activity. Bordering the vast Lake Chad basin, this area serves as a critical junction between Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. Since 2009, the region has witnessed a persistent threat from armed factions, including both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Casualties confirmed amid ongoing operations
Local residents reported that the assault occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, with multiple soldiers killed during the confrontation. “A dozen troops were killed in the attack,” stated a resident who chose to remain anonymous for safety reasons. “Several attackers were also eliminated, and military forces are currently conducting clearance operations in the area.”
Reports from community members on social media further indicated that a total of ten military personnel and four national guard members perished in the violence. While no official death toll has been released, Niger’s state-run news agency confirmed that the fatalities occurred due to an assault by Boko Haram elements in the vicinity of N’Guigmi.
Security response and regional implications
The attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing Niger’s southeastern frontiers, where cross-border militant activity remains a major concern.
