A military outpost near N’Guigmi, in southeastern Niger, came under a sudden assault by Boko Haram militants on Friday morning, leaving a toll of at least ten soldiers dead, local sources confirmed.
The attack unfolded in the garrison town of N’Guigmi, a strategic location bordering the vast Lake Chad wetland shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. Since 2009, the area has become a hotspot for jihadist activity, hosting militants from both Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Casualties reported amid ongoing military operations
A local resident, requesting anonymity for security reasons, revealed the attack’s impact: “A dozen soldiers were killed during the assault by Boko Haram fighters early Friday. There were also losses among the attackers, and the army has launched clearance operations in response.“
Further reports from residents on social media indicated that in addition to the ten military personnel, four members of the national guard were also killed in the raid. The Nigerien Press Agency (ANP), the country’s official news outlet, later confirmed the fatalities without providing specific numbers, stating that the victims “perished in an attack by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.”
Security situation remains volatile
The assault highlights the persistent threat posed by jihadist groups in the Diffa region, where insurgent factions continue to challenge regional security. Military and security forces are actively engaged in counter-operations to restore order and prevent further incursions.
