The Senegal presidency has confirmed the appointment of Ousmane Diagne as the new President of the Constitutional Council, following a decree signed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on July 13. Diagne, a former Minister of Justice, takes over from the late Mamadou Badio Camara, whose tenure ended with his passing.
This appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as the high court recently reviewed the country’s constitutional reform, which was approved by the National Assembly. The decision marks a significant milestone for President Faye, who had referred the matter to the Constitutional Council for validation.
Not all stakeholders share this view. The Pastef party, led by Ousmane Sonko and a key proponent of the constitutional amendments, has expressed disappointment with the outcome, viewing it as a setback for their reform agenda.
The Constitutional Council plays a critical role in Senegal’s legal and political framework. Its responsibilities include reviewing the constitutionality of laws, resolving electoral disputes, and ensuring the integrity of voting processes.
