Senegal – Politics – Institutions
Dakar, 29 June – Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly, has described the constitutional reform adopted Monday by the parliamentary majority as one of the most consolidating initiatives, as it helps perfect Senegalese democracy and transparency in public management.
“This constitutional reform is one of the most consolidating. It allows us to take giant strides in perfecting Senegalese democracy and transparency in public management,” he said.
Sonko was chairing the plenary session that examined bill No. 17/2026 on the revision of the constitution, a proposal from the Pastef-Les patriotes parliamentary group.
The head of the parliamentary institution announced that the adopted text has been sent to the head of state for further action.
“I will not invoke Article 103. I will ask the president of the republic to promulgate this law, simply and purely, because the Constitutional Council, whose decisions are binding on all public, administrative and political authorities, simultaneously achieves both adoption and approval,” he stated.
According to him, the vote on the bill marks the end of the adoption procedure for this important text.
Ousmane Sonko recalled the historical process of the revision, which began several years ago.
“The amendments that have just been integrated into the constitution have gone through the entire political journey of our commitments,” he added.
“Dialogue is important, but it is not institutional. This dialogue existed,” said Sonko.
The president of the republic had wished to convene a political dialogue in which Pastef-Les patriotes participated, along with many other political parties and organizations of all affiliations, Ousmane Sonko recalled.
He did not fail to congratulate the deputies who carried this constitutional revision proposal, which is in line with the outcomes of the dialogue.
Regarding the declaration of assets, the former prime minister assured that he would soon carry out this exercise after leaving the head of government.
“I declared my assets as prime minister. I have three months to make another declaration upon leaving. And I will declare them next week,” Ousmane Sonko announced.
