Political rift between Senegal’s ousmane sonko and president bassirou diomaye faye

The political divide between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has now become impossible to ignore. During a press conference held on Tuesday in Dakar, the former Prime Minister outlined the reasons behind his party, Pastef-Les Patriotes, refusing to join the new government led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lô.

Sonko revealed that discussions with the Head of State exposed fundamental disagreements on key national strategies. The most contentious issues include judicial reform, accountability measures, renegotiation of economically unfavorable contracts, and public debt management.

The Pastef leader emphasized his lack of confidence in the government’s financial commitments and future dealings with international lenders. He also voiced concerns over subsidy policies and the administration’s approach to judicial governance, stressing that these areas lacked sufficient clarity and alignment with his party’s vision.

Beyond policy disputes, the government’s composition emerged as another source of tension. Sonko argued that his party, which holds a dominant position in Senegal’s political landscape, deserved significant representation in the executive branch. He insisted that Pastef could not participate without securing at least half of the ministerial portfolios.

The former Prime Minister also questioned the political legitimacy of the new cabinet, despite the inclusion of several figures affiliated with his movement. However, he made it clear that his party would not pursue any immediate action to destabilize the government, ruling out the submission of a no-confidence motion for now.

This stance underscores growing strains at the highest levels of government and signals a new phase of uncertainty in the relationship between the presidency and the leading force behind Senegal’s 2024 political shift.
