A concerted effort to establish a unified global communication strategy is currently underway.
Ouagadougou, February 20, 2013 – Caritas organizations from across the Sahel region have gathered in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, to bolster their collective response to the profound food and sociopolitical challenges gripping the area. The high-level meeting, which began on February 19, involves key representatives from Caritas Burkina Faso, Caritas Mali, Caritas Niger, and Caritas Senegal. These entities have been foundational members of the Sahel Caritas platform since its establishment in 2007.
The crucial discussions, set to conclude on February 23, include information officers and emergency operations managers. Their primary objective is to forge a cohesive regional communication network among these vital Catholic aid organizations, enhancing their ability to coordinate and disseminate critical updates.
This significant assembly forms a core component of the broader Emergency Appeal 28/2012 initiative. This project is specifically designed to reinforce Caritas’ comprehensive preparedness and response capabilities in the face of humanitarian emergencies exacerbated by the ongoing crisis in Mali.
Père Isidore Ouédraogo, the Executive Secretary of Caritas Burkina, emphasized that the current talks are focused on creating a shared operational framework for all communication and emergency personnel within the Sahel Caritas network. This framework is crucial for significantly improving their intervention efficacy and overall responsiveness.
Current estimates indicate that approximately 300,000 Malian refugees have sought safety in neighboring countries, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian action.
