Senegal football federation faces scrutiny after Lions’ world cup exit

Football fans across Senegal remain stunned by the premature exit of the Lions of Teranga from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the turmoil has deepened following public statements from the president of the Senegalese Football Federation.

Abdoulaye Fall has placed sole responsibility for the team’s failure on the shoulders of the former national coach, triggering widespread outrage among supporters and analysts. Mamadou Laila Diallo, a prominent football enthusiast, expressed his disapproval of the federation president’s remarks.

“His statements were reckless. There is no justification for blaming only one person. This failure cannot be pinned solely on the coach. Even his comments about the team doctor were unfounded. While Pape Thiaw’s departure may have been justified on sporting grounds, the federation president’s attitude only serves to distract from his own shortcomings,” Diallo emphasized.

Social media platforms have erupted with calls for the dissolution of the federation, with many advocating for urgent reforms. Malang Sané, a vocal critic, insists that structural changes are essential for the future of Senegalese football.

“The entire federation must be restructured. Changing leadership without reforming the underlying regulations will not solve the problem. This must be the government’s top priority,” Sané argued.

Calls for accountability within Senegal’s football governing body

While some call for drastic measures, others warn against destabilizing the federation without thorough investigation. Djibril Diata advocates for a comprehensive inquiry to uncover the true causes of the team’s World Cup elimination.

“We need a deeper investigation to understand what really happened during this World Cup. There are too many unanswered questions. The federation has become a playground for opportunists who prioritize personal gain over the sport’s integrity. These issues must be exposed,” Diata stated.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has intervened, instructing the federation to halt all public statements and media interactions related to the World Cup debacle. The ministry underscored its commitment to transparency and good governance in sports administration.

A protest held in Dakar on the same day reflects growing public demand for accountability and reform within the football governing body.
