Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has initiated sweeping reforms to regulate foreign travel by senior public officials, signaling a crackdown on what he views as unchecked spending and administrative excess. The measures specifically target ministers and directors-general, who will now face stricter oversight when requesting international travel for official duties.

New restrictions take effect immediately

Under the revised guidelines, travel requests from ministers will undergo immediate scrutiny, with most being automatically blocked unless deemed absolutely necessary. Speaking on the changes, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for transparency, stating, “I now review nearly all ministerial travel requests personally, as prior practices lacked accountability.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted concerns over the travel patterns of directors-general, many of whom he noted often bypass proper authorization channels. “While some directors-general claim they report to their respective supervisory authorities, many trips lack justification and exceed reasonable durations,” he observed. To address this, Sonko has mandated that all future travel by directors-general must receive his direct approval before being processed.

Past travel patterns raise eyebrows

An internal review of recent travel records has uncovered alarming trends. In one particularly striking case, a director-general spent a total of thirty days abroad over a three-month period, with similar patterns observed among other officials. The Prime Minister expressed his astonishment at these findings, noting that such prolonged absences disrupt critical government functions and strain public resources.

In response, Sonko has ordered a comprehensive audit of all overseas travel conducted by senior officials in recent months. This review aims to identify any irregularities and ensure that future trips align strictly with official mandates and fiscal responsibility.

Reforms aim to restore public trust

The newly implemented travel restrictions mark the latest in a series of measures introduced by Prime Minister Sonko to enhance governance and fiscal discipline within Senegal’s public sector. By tightening control over administrative travel, the government seeks to demonstrate its commitment to combating wasteful spending and restoring public confidence in state institutions.

The reforms also underscore the Prime Minister’s broader agenda to streamline government operations and prioritize domestic priorities over international engagements that offer limited tangible benefits to Senegalese citizens.
