Senegal leadership transition: sonko warns new pm amid governance challenges

Senegal’s leadership transition: Sonko issues caution to new Prime Minister

During the official handover ceremony at the Primature in Dakar, outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, exchanged messages of mutual respect while underscoring the importance of continuity in governance. The transition marked not only a change in leadership but also highlighted the collaborative spirit that has defined their professional relationship in recent years.

The ceremony, held on a Friday, served as a platform for both leaders to reflect on their shared journey in public service. The new Prime Minister, Al Aminou Lô, took the opportunity to acknowledge his predecessor’s influence in his career. He recounted how, in April 2024, Sonko extended an invitation that would shape his trajectory in national governance. « I was called upon without prior acquaintance. He placed his trust in me from the outset, » stated, referring to their early collaboration under the National Transformation Agenda.

Highlighting the milestones achieved together, Al Aminou Lô emphasized his role in implementing the President’s reform initiatives. « The Head of State entrusted me with responsibilities tied to the National Transformation Agenda, and together, we delivered results that have been widely recognized, » he noted. He further disclosed that Sonko had personally encouraged him to act as a bridge between the Primature and the Presidency to ensure seamless coordination in executing the agenda.

Reflecting on the transition period, Al Aminou Lô described it as a moment steeped in both institutional significance and human warmth. « It is an honor to be taking this step with someone who has shown unwavering support for the progress of our nation. His generosity has been invaluable, » he remarked. The new Prime Minister also shared an exchange in which Sonko forewarned him of the challenges ahead. « He made it clear: ‘This will not be easy,’ » recalled, while reaffirming his commitment to maintaining open channels of communication with his predecessor for guidance and collaboration.

The handover ceremony concluded with a clear message from both leaders: despite the transition, the spirit of cooperation remains a cornerstone of Senegal’s governance. As Al Aminou Lô assumes his new responsibilities, the nation watches closely, aware that the road ahead will demand resilience, unity, and strategic foresight.
