Senegal political funds dispute erupts between sonko and president diomaye

In a rare public display of discord within Senegal’s highest executive circles, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has openly challenged President Bassirou Diomaye Faye over the handling of political funds regulation—a cornerstone issue that defined their party’s electoral campaign. Addressing lawmakers, Sonko revealed that the initiative to legislate on this matter came from Deputy Guy Marius Sagna, a move the Prime Minister admitted he did not endorse in its current form.

Sonko argued that such a reform should originate from the executive branch, not the legislative assembly, emphasizing that the government cannot afford to remain inactive on this critical issue. He stated that he had already raised these concerns directly with the President, urging decisive action rather than delay.

President Diomaye, however, responded cautiously, requesting additional time to assess the feasibility of the proposed changes without committing to a specific timeline. This measured approach has now prompted Sonko to issue a stark warning: if the President continues to postpone a decision, the Prime Minister will not hesitate to advance the bill through the Council of Ministers for adoption.

This escalating disagreement over political funds transparency underscores the deeper governance tensions simmering between Senegal’s two top leaders. Beyond the procedural debate, the standoff highlights differing visions for institutional reform and accountability in the young administration.
