Following recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko during his visit to Touba, political figures across Senegal have weighed in on the controversy. Minister of Terrestrial and Air Transport, Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, strongly criticized the leader of Pastef, asserting that his claims about ‘stolen money’ being funneled into the holy city were unfounded and deeply disrespectful.

In an official statement, the minister condemned Sonko’s remarks, emphasizing that they tarnish the reputation of Touba and its residents. « Linking Touba to money laundering is a blatant insult to the sacred city, its people, and the core values of Mouridism, » Ndiaye declared, stressing that such allegations lack any factual basis.
a spiritual heritage under attack
Ndiaye argued that Sonko’s comments reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of Touba’s spiritual significance and historical legacy. « To claim Touba’s residents are involved in illicit financial activities is to ignore centuries of devotion, integrity, and hard work that define the city’s identity, » he stated. The minister highlighted the deep-rooted teachings of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, which prioritize dignity, honesty, and self-reliance—values at the heart of Mouridism. « The people of Touba are known for their unwavering commitment to Serigne Touba’s teachings. Suggesting otherwise is a serious misjudgment, » he added.
He also pointed out that the absence of key religious and local leaders during Sonko’s visit may signify widespread disapproval of his statements. Beyond the controversy, Ndiaye commended President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for his unwavering support of Touba, noting that the president consistently addresses the city’s needs with tangible solutions. « The President understands the significance of Touba and its people. He works tirelessly to meet their concerns and advance their development, » the minister affirmed.
Ndiaye extended his praise to Prime Minister Mouhamadou Al Amine Lo, acknowledging his efforts—under the president’s guidance—to resolve long-standing administrative issues inherited from previous governments. The minister also urged political actors to prioritize national unity over divisive rhetoric, stressing that Senegal’s progress depends on cohesion. « The country needs solidarity, not confrontation. President Faye embodies integrity and dedication, focused solely on serving Senegal despite relentless criticism, » he concluded. « His mission is clear: to fulfill the aspirations of the Senegalese people and guide the nation toward prosperity. »
