Senegal politics: minister Moussa Bala Fofana responds to Ousmane Sonko’s criticism

In the midst of growing internal tensions within the PASTEF party, Minister Moussa Bala Fofana has openly addressed Ousmane Sonko’s recent remarks, firmly reaffirming his commitment to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership while emphasizing the necessity of state continuity.
The Urban Planning, Local Governance, and Territorial Development Minister’s statement comes against a backdrop of political unrest within PASTEF, where questions about the loyalty of top officials have sparked heated debates.
In a carefully worded response, Minister Fofana addressed Ousmane Sonko’s public criticism, which had highlighted concerns over certain government members allegedly straying from the party’s core political directives. The minister, now serving his third term, began by underscoring the importance of maintaining state stability and expressed deep appreciation for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s renewed trust in his leadership.
Fofana revealed that he had not known President Faye personally before his party’s rise to power. However, he described the working environment under the new administration as one driven by a commitment to public policy implementation. He also reflected on his past collaboration with Ousmane Sonko, now the National Assembly President, whom he described as a pivotal figure in shaping the party’s original vision. Despite current internal disagreements, the minister emphasized that the personal and political bonds forged during that period remain unbroken.
Directly addressing reports of Sonko’s remarks from June 2, 2026, Fofana dismissed any interpretation of his actions as rebellious or disloyal. With clarity, he stated: “Yes, I acted freely and independently.” He clarified that his decision to remain in government was not driven by career ambitions or defiance but by a personal interpretation of his public duty. He firmly denied any political pressure influencing his choice.
The minister framed his decision as a balancing act between party discipline and national responsibility. He explained that his priority lay in upholding the commitments made to citizens during the 2024 electoral campaign. In his words, it was a choice guided by conscience and duty: “Between partisan loyalty and my duty to the nation, I chose to continue the mission entrusted to me.” He positioned this stance as a commitment to public service where the greater good outweighs short-term political considerations.
Fofana also acknowledged the personal and political consequences of his position, accepting potential backlash within his former political circles. He affirmed that he had anticipated criticism and misunderstanding, rejecting any pursuit of popularity in favor of administrative continuity and policy implementation—priorities he deemed essential in the current climate. Concluding his remarks, he framed the political situation in a broader context, asserting that “Senegal is greater than any of us.” He concluded by reaffirming his loyalty to what he termed a duty to conscience and public service.
