Senegal’s prime minister ousmane sonko dismissed by president bassirou diomaye faye
Ousmane Sonko is no longer Senegal’s Prime Minister and head of government. The decision was announced live on national television by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, marking the end of a professional relationship that had visibly deteriorated between the two leaders.
The dismissal also concludes the terms of all ministers and state secretaries within the government. The announcement triggered an immediate response from Ousmane Sonko, who shared on social media: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully at the Keur Gorgui residence.”
government dissolution and transition
With Sonko’s removal comes the dissolution of Senegal’s entire government structure. The Presidency confirmed that a new Prime Minister will be appointed shortly, followed by the formation of a fresh cabinet under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership.
Sonko’s pivotal role in Faye’s 2024 presidential election cannot be overstated. Although ineligible to run himself, Sonko strategically backed Faye as the candidate, leading an energetic campaign that culminated in Faye’s landslide victory with over 54% of the vote in a single round.
The political partnership that once propelled both leaders to prominence has now officially ended, leaving observers to assess the implications for Senegal’s governance moving forward.
