Tchad: opposition warns of authoritarian slide ahead of protests
The political wing of the Wakit Tama movement has sounded the alarm over what it describes as a dangerous authoritarian drift in Chad, calling for nationwide mobilization on May 16, 2026.
During a press briefing held to outline its concerns, the coalition highlighted the worsening political crisis gripping the country under President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s administration.
journalists under pressure
Wakit Tama praised the work of Chad’s journalists, describing them as “a vital shield against oblivion and deception”, despite facing harassment, intimidation and repression.
political prisoners and justice concerns
The movement condemned the recent eight-year prison sentences handed to eight opposition leaders from the GCAP coalition, calling the verdict “a travesty of justice” and accusing the judiciary of being “a tool of the regime”.
Among those whose immediate release is demanded are former Prime Minister Succès Masra and other detained activists.
international inaction criticized
The coalition also expressed frustration over the silence of human rights organizations and international partners, who have yet to respond meaningfully to Chad’s alleged violations of fundamental freedoms.
a call for unity and action
In a powerful statement, a Wakit Tama spokesperson declared: “The Chadian people seek no favors or privileges. We demand justice, liberty, dignity and the full respect of human rights”.
He added: “On May 16, the people will raise their voices against injustice, fear and the suppression of freedoms. There will be no turning back.”
The movement has called on all citizens to participate in peaceful demonstrations scheduled for Saturday.
