Togo and Egypt deepen diplomatic and economic ties at Seoul summit

During the inaugural Korea-Africa ministerial meeting held in Seoul on June 1 and 2, Togo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, engaged in a productive discussion with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, to explore avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

The high-level meeting provided an opportunity to assess the current state of relations and identify new areas for collaboration. The Egyptian diplomat praised the robust and positive dynamics shaping exchanges between Lomé and Cairo, emphasizing Cairo’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Togo.

Expanding economic and infrastructural cooperation

At the heart of the discussions were concrete opportunities for Egyptian businesses to contribute to Togo’s development initiatives. Key sectors identified for collaboration include infrastructure, energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and port development—all of which align with Togo’s national development priorities.

The two ministers also examined strategies for technology transfer and digital capacity-building, recognizing these as critical enablers for economic transformation and administrative modernization across African nations.

Regional security and diplomatic solidarity

The talks extended beyond economic matters, with both leaders addressing regional security challenges in the Great Lakes area and the Sahel. Egypt’s foreign minister commended Togo’s proactive mediation efforts in conflict zones across the continent, reaffirming Cairo’s support for initiatives aimed at fostering peace, stability, and dialogue in Africa.

Consolidating a strategic partnership

This meeting underscores the shared ambition of Togo and Egypt to fortify their strategic alliance and advance South-South cooperation in addressing the continent’s most pressing development and security challenges.
