Gabon elected vice president of un general assembly

On June 2, 2026, Gabon secured a historic position as vice president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), sharing the role with 21 other newly elected representatives. For Libreville, this milestone signifies the country’s return to the governing body of the UN’s principal deliberative organ—a first in nearly a decade.

Gabon will not stand alone in this endeavor. Alongside five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—the country will officially assume its duties in September 2026, marking the start of the 81st session of the UNGA.

Representing the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will take on a leading role. Collaborating closely with the elected president of the session, Khalilur Rahman, the Gabonese delegation will help shape and streamline the international legislative agenda.

Navigating the UN’s inner workings

Over the next year, Gabon will wield significant managerial and political influence. The Gabonese representative will preside over multiple plenary sessions, both routine and high-level.

The true power, however, lies within the UN’s influential General Committee. By occupying a seat there, Gabon will directly contribute to the institution’s governance, including the allocation of agenda items, the planning of pivotal votes on global resolutions, and the management of key institutional priorities—a strategic platform to amplify its voice.

Championing Africa’s priorities

Beyond procedural matters, this opportunity will allow Gabon to align with fellow member states. In close coordination with other African nations, Gabonese diplomacy aims to address the continent’s most pressing concerns. Sustainable development, climate action, and reforms within the UN system will top the agenda.

This diplomatic triumph underscores the international outreach vision championed by Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
