Togo’s anc firmly rejects new constitutional revision proposals

The Alliance Nationale pour le Changement (ANC) is vocally opposing recent rumors suggesting the initiation of fresh political discussions aimed at a potential revision of the Togolese Constitution. In a public statement released on May 28, 2026, the party, under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Fabre, condemned these developments as a political maneuver designed to distract and reiterated its firm stance against any such undertaking that lacks broad consensus.

According to the ANC, reports of impending talks to amend the constitutional text once again raise significant concerns. The party believes that such an initiative would fail to address the genuine aspirations of the Togolese populace regarding democracy and effective governance. Instead, it would likely serve to further entrench the existing political framework established through recent institutional reforms.

In its communiqué, the political group declared its refusal to participate in any process it deems a “sham dialogue.” The ANC urged democratic forces, civil society organizations, and international partners of Togo to remain vigilant against any reform effort that does not emerge from a comprehensive national consensus.

The ANC also maintained its reservations concerning the Constitution currently in force. The party argues that the institutional modifications implemented in recent years continue to provoke questions regarding their legitimacy and their capacity to truly fulfill the democratic desires of the citizenry.

Through this declaration, the opposition reaffirmed its conviction that any significant constitutional reform must be preceded by an inclusive dialogue involving all political and social stakeholders across the nation. This condition, the party emphasizes, is essential to ensure the credibility and ultimate acceptance of any future reforms.

This definitive position comes at a time when institutional matters remain central to the national political discourse. As speculation mounts about another potential constitutional revision, the ANC clearly intends to distance itself and preempt any initiative it perceives as contrary to the principles of a consensual democratic process.
