Lucas Herrington, the dynamic 18-year-old central defender who emerged as a standout for the Socceroos during the 2026 World Cup, is on the cusp of a groundbreaking move. Currently showcasing his talent with the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer (MLS), Herrington is reportedly nearing an agreement to join Hull City, a newly promoted contender in the prestigious Premier League. This potential transfer carries a fee that would shatter the existing record for an Australian footballer.
Discussions are actively underway between the Colorado Rapids and Hull City, with reported figures for the deal ranging between 35 and 38 million Australian dollars. This sum would significantly eclipse the current Australian transfer record, which was set in 2023 when Harry Souttar moved from Stoke City to Leicester City for approximately 14.5 million British pounds, equivalent to around 23 million Australian dollars. Sources close to the negotiations indicate that Hull City is prepared to commit up to 21.5 million British pounds, with an additional clause granting the Colorado Rapids 15% of any future resale value for Herrington.
Born in Brisbane on September 5, 2007, Herrington had already captured the attention of elite European clubs, including FC Barcelona and Liverpool, even before the World Cup commenced. His exceptional performances throughout the tournament, where he solidified his reputation as one of the most formidable defenders despite his youth, only intensified this widespread interest. A product of the Brisbane Roar academy, Herrington is set to be the sole Socceroo competing in the Premier League next season.
Acun Ilicali, the owner of Hull City, publicly confirmed the club’s keen interest in Herrington during an interview on Saturday. Should this transfer materialize, it would undeniably mark a pivotal moment, cementing the rise of a new wave of Australian footballing talent onto the global stage, following in the footsteps of legends like Tim Cahill, Mark Viduka, and Harry Kewell, who historically left their mark on European football.
