Strengthening military and diplomatic ties in the Sahel
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily consolidating its achievements across various strategic sectors. This progress was highlighted by Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, during a recent interview on May 9, 2026.
According to the Nigerian diplomat, the three member nations—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—have significantly bolstered their defense cooperation. This includes the establishment of a unified force and a joint operational command center situated in Niamey. This framework serves as the backbone for coordinating security missions on the ground.
Expanding cooperation beyond defense
In the diplomatic arena, the confederation has introduced a shared diplomatic map and improved coordination between the embassies of member countries. These efforts aim to ensure that the AES maintains a unified stance within international organizations. Furthermore, the authorities emphasized that the recognition of international bodies remains a matter of national sovereignty for each member state.
The integration process is also moving into economic and social spheres. Plans are underway to launch an investment bank dedicated to financing development initiatives across the AES region. Additionally, the creation of collective media outlets—including television, radio, and print—is intended to streamline institutional communication and combat disinformation campaigns targeting the Sahel.
Solidarity and continued counter-terrorism efforts
Recently, an AES delegation led by General Célestin Simporé traveled to Bamako to show support for Mali following the passing of General Sadio Camara. The mission, received by the Malian Transition President, General Assimi Goïta, conveyed the sympathies of both Burkina Faso and Niger.
During the visit, officials paid tribute to the late General, describing him as a pivotal figure in Sahelian military collaboration. The delegation reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the member states to battle armed groups. General Simporé stressed that the AES forces intend to ramp up their operations to eliminate terrorist threats throughout the region.
