The governments of Bénin and Canada have officially launched a permanent framework for political and diplomatic dialogue, designed to institutionalize regular consultations and ensure consistent follow-up on shared commitments. This landmark agreement was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bénin via the social media platform X on August 5, 2026.
Strengthening bilateral ties through structured cooperation
The framework was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed by Amori Brunet, Bénin’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Anita Anand, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. According to the Béninois chancellery, the initiative aims to « systematically monitor joint commitments, coordinate future bilateral actions, and enhance collaboration on shared regional and international priorities. »
This development builds on a long-standing partnership that began in 1962, marking the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Over the decades, the collaboration has centered on economic development support, public health initiatives, and educational exchanges, with bilateral trade consistently exceeding CAD 40 million annually.
Technical consultations pave the way for sustained engagement
The announcement follows the accreditation of Canada’s newly appointed ambassador to Bénin, Evedabi, whose credentials were presented on August 3, 2026. The credentialing ceremony was followed by a series of technical working sessions at the Béninois Foreign Ministry, involving key government officials.
Key participants in these discussions included Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Deputy Minister responsible for External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management, and Shegun Bakari, Minister of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Industry, and Private Sector Promotion. The newly established framework underscores a renewed bilateral governance model, reinforcing the commitment of both nations to advancing their diplomatic and economic interests through structured, long-term collaboration.
