Benin customs seize over 5,500 smuggled smartphones at Hillacondji border
A major crackdown on cross-border fraud has just unfolded at Benin’s southwestern frontier. Customs officials in Hillacondji intercepted a large shipment of illegally imported mobile phones before they could infiltrate local markets.
Operation yields record haul of smuggled mobile devices
On July 12, 2026, a coordinated enforcement operation led by the Hillacondji Customs Brigade, under the command of Captain Fortuné Allagbé, resulted in the seizure of 5,574 smuggled Android smartphones. The interception took place just before the devices could be diverted into illicit distribution networks.
The success of the operation stems from meticulous intelligence gathering and proactive monitoring by customs teams deployed along the border. This initiative underscores the government’s intensified efforts to curb fraudulent trade and protect Benin’s economic interests.
Zero tolerance for economic sabotage
This landmark seizure aligns with the broader anti-fraud strategy spearheaded by the Director General of Customs, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou Aboudou. The operation highlights the Benin Customs Administration’s commitment to:
- Shielding state revenue from losses caused by untaxed imports.
- Ensuring fair market competition by dismantling illegal supply chains.
- Safeguarding formal sector jobs linked to legitimate trade.
By dismantling this smuggling network, Benin’s customs authorities have sent a clear message: illegal trade will not be tolerated, and border security remains a top priority.
