Bénin hosts 2026 world refugee day: renewed commitment to protection

On Saturday, June 20, 2026, the official ceremonies marking World Refugee Day were held at the Youth Center in Natitingou. The event, held under the international theme “Until everyone is safe”, underscored Benin’s unwavering commitment to protecting displaced populations within its borders.

Government and United Nations unite for refugee protection

Minister of Interior and Public Security Mr. Djibril Mama Cissé presided over the opening ceremony, joined by Ms. Aminatou Sar, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Benin, and Mr. Thomas Wyllie, Deputy Regional Director of the UNHCR for West Africa. The gathering featured speeches, exhibitions showcasing income-generating activities by refugees, and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony to promote environmental stewardship.

The 2026 global theme highlights the urgency of addressing the plight of refugees and asylum seekers worldwide. Benin currently hosts 29,000 refugees and asylum seekers, with an additional 14,000 pending status determination, reflecting both the challenges and the country’s dedication to humanitarian principles.

Benin’s policy framework strengthens refugee rights

In her address, Ms. Aminatou Sar emphasized the dual nature of these figures: while they demonstrate significant pressure on Benin’s resources, they also reflect the government’s firm commitment to providing shelter and protection. The UN system, she noted, continues to collaborate closely with Benin to ensure displaced persons have access to food, healthcare, education, and psychosocial support.

Mr. Djibril Mama Cissé reaffirmed Benin’s dedication to the principle of non-refoulement and the right to asylum, even amid regional security concerns. He stressed that national security and international protection obligations can coexist through robust identification, registration, and monitoring mechanisms. Under Benin’s strengthened legal and institutional framework, refugees benefit from essential services in health, education, employment, and social protection.

Community engagement and sustainable integration

The launch event also included remarks from Mr. Norbert Tido N’Dah, First Deputy Mayor of Natitingou, and Mr. Albert Nacoulma, spokesperson for refugees. Mr. Nacoulma reiterated refugees’ commitment to respecting Benin’s laws and contributing to social cohesion, signaling a shared vision for peaceful coexistence.

The ceremony concluded with the planting of trees and community activities, symbolizing both environmental responsibility and the long-term integration of refugees into local life.
