The Beninese Armed Forces (FAB) executed a decisive operation in early July around the Kouandé area, striking a major blow against armed extremists. Six terrorists were neutralized, and a significant cache of weapons was seized, demonstrating Cotonou’s unwavering commitment to defending its national sovereignty.
A relentless pursuit over 30 kilometers
Intelligence reports of suspicious movements prompted a high-stakes pursuit by Beninese commandos. Tracking a heavily armed convoy of ten militants through rugged terrain and dense vegetation, the FAB troops anticipated the enemy’s path, setting up a lethal ambush. When the terrorist group entered the designated kill zone, the operation unfolded with surgical precision.
The firefight was intense, but the disciplined response of the Beninese forces ensured a clean victory. All six terrorists were eliminated on the spot, while the remaining militants, including several wounded, escaped into the chaos. Remarkably, no casualties were reported among the FAB ranks.
A devastating blow to terrorist logistics
The operation didn’t just eliminate fighters—it dismantled a critical logistical network. A thorough search of the engagement zone yielded a substantial haul of military equipment, crippling the terrorists’ operational capacity.
Recovered assets included:
- Numerous AK-pattern assault rifles and loaded magazines
- Professional-grade radio transceivers and mobile devices
- Multiple motorcycles used for rapid strikes
The interception of communication devices is particularly valuable. Analyzing these assets often reveals local support networks and allows military intelligence to predict future infiltration attempts.
Sovereignty intact: Benin stands firm
This operation sends a clear message: Benin will not yield an inch of its territory to armed groups. While some analysts speculated that coastal Gulf of Guinea nations would falter under jihadist pressure, the Beninese state has proven its resilience through proactive military action.
The FAB’s strategy remains uncompromising—securing the homeland by striking terror cells before they threaten civilian populations. This offensive posture underscores Benin’s refusal to adopt a passive defensive stance.
The AES gap: a widening regional security void
Despite this success, a troubling regional reality persists. The surge in terrorist activity is exacerbated by the deteriorating security governance in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), particularly in Niger and Burkina Faso.
Post-coup realignments in Niamey and Ouagadougou have stalled cross-border cooperation. Worse, military forces in these nations have withdrawn from remote border zones, including the volatile “three-border area” and frontiers with Benin. This tactical retreat leaves a dangerous power vacuum, forcing Benin to shoulder the burden alone.
Terrorists exploit this absence, using neighboring countries as safe havens. When pressured by Beninese forces—as in Kouandé—they slip back across borders where local armies are absent, evading capture with impunity.
A tactical win, but the fight is far from over
The Kouandé operation is a testament to the bravery and skill of Benin’s military. By dismantling this cell and seizing its arsenal, commandos prevented a potential catastrophe for local communities.
Yet the victory also highlights Benin’s solitary struggle. While its forces operate with unmatched dedication, the lack of reliable regional allies hampers long-term security. True stability in northern Benin demands more than military courage—it requires neighboring states to fulfill their sovereign duty to control their own territories. Until then, the Beninese shield remains the last line of defense.
