Benin and Niger take decisive step toward border reopening
A significant milestone in Benin-Niger relations has been reached with the establishment of an expert committee tasked with evaluating conditions for reopening the shared border within a fortnight. The announcement follows a high-level working visit to Niamey by Benin‘s head of state, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation.
The joint communiqué issued after the meeting between President Romuald Wadagni and his Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani outlined the committee’s mandate: identifying and addressing existing obstacles to border normalization within 15 days. This initiative signals a clear political will to restore economic and social ties that have been disrupted since the border closure in mid-2023.
Strengthening regional ties through dialogue
The discussions between the two leaders, conducted in a spirit of mutual respect, covered critical areas including regional security, economic integration, and cross-border collaboration. Both presidents emphasized the enduring historical bonds between their nations, stressing that enhanced cooperation would better serve the shared aspirations of their citizens for stability and prosperity.
A key agreement reached was the revitalization of the Niger-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission, ensuring regular high-level engagements to sustain momentum in bilateral relations. This mechanism is expected to facilitate ongoing policy alignment and joint project implementation.
Confronting security challenges together
With transnational terrorism posing a persistent threat across West Africa, the two heads of state underscored the urgency of coordinated security efforts. They pledged to intensify intelligence sharing and operational collaboration to combat terrorist networks and cross-border criminal activities that threaten regional development.
Both leaders acknowledged that unchecked insecurity has severely hampered economic growth and social cohesion in the subregion, making enhanced security cooperation a prerequisite for any meaningful progress in other sectors.
Path to border normalization
The border question featured prominently in the negotiations, with both sides recognizing its pivotal role in fostering trade and human mobility. Closed in the aftermath of the July 2023 crisis, the crossing has remained a critical barrier to economic exchanges between the two countries.

The visit concluded with an invitation from President Wadagni to President Tiani to undertake an official state visit to Benin.
