Benin and Niger advance toward border reopening with new expert committee
The strengthening partnership between Benin and Niger has taken a significant step forward. Following a working visit to Niamey by Beninese President Romuald Wadagni on June 2, 2026, both nations have established a joint expert committee tasked with evaluating the conditions for reopening their shared border.
The announcement came in a joint communiqué issued after high-level discussions between Romuald Wadagni and Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani. The committee has been given a strict 15-day deadline to identify existing barriers and propose solutions to facilitate the border’s reopening.
Shared commitment to regional cooperation
According to official statements, the meeting fostered an atmosphere of mutual understanding and addressed critical areas of collaboration including security, regional integration, and economic cooperation.
Both leaders highlighted the deep historical bonds between their countries, emphasizing their dedication to deepening bilateral relations to better serve their citizens’ needs for stability, safety, and prosperity.
They also agreed to revitalize existing cooperation frameworks, particularly through the regular convening of the Niger-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission.
Border security remains a priority
With ongoing security challenges across the Sahel region, the presidents underscored the urgent need for enhanced cross-border collaboration. They pledged to strengthen joint efforts against terrorism and transnational crime, which continue to hinder economic and social progress in West Africa.
Path forward for border normalization
The border issue featured prominently in their discussions. Closed in July 2023 amid regional tensions, the frontier represents a critical component of trade and people-to-people movement between the two nations.
The creation of the expert committee signals a clear political will in both capitals to progressively normalize relations. The committee’s findings, expected within two weeks, will guide both governments in determining the practical steps for reopening the border.
As the visit concluded, Romuald Wadagni extended an official invitation to Abdourahamane Tiani to visit Benin, further cementing their commitment to building a new era of trust and cooperation.
