Cotonou is poised to elevate its continental influence next year when it assumes the rotating presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the entire month of September 2026. The groundwork for this pivotal role was laid during high-level consultations in Addis-Abeba, where Bénin’s Foreign Minister, Corinne Amori Brunet, met with the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. These discussions took place on the sidelines of the 49th session of the AU Executive Council.
A Two-Year Mandate Begins with a Month of Strategic Leadership
The upcoming PSC presidency is not an isolated event but the first tangible step in a broader two-year commitment (2026-2028) secured by Bénin in February. Seven months after securing its seat among the 15 rotating members of this decision-making body, the country now steps into the spotlight of an institution tasked with crisis prevention, monitoring, and resolution across Africa.
While the rotating presidency does not grant unilateral decision-making power, it positions Bénin at the heart of continental diplomacy. During its tenure, Cotonou will shape the agenda in several key ways:
