Since assuming office on 24 May 2026, Bénin’s newly elected President Romuald Wadagni has embarked on a diplomatic mission to Niamey and Ouagadougou, marking his first official foreign visit. The tour aims to restore and deepen bilateral relations with the Alliance of Sahel States, a regional bloc formed by Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali following political shifts in these nations.
President Wadagni’s visit to Niamey holds particular significance. He becomes the first Béninois head of state to travel to Niger since the 26 July 2023 change in leadership, when General Abdourahamane Tiani assumed power after the ousting of Mohamed Bazoum.
While previous administrations had initiated dialogue—including a July 2024 working visit by a Nigerien delegation to Cotonou—substantive progress has stalled. The closure of borders between Bénin and Niger continues to strain economic ties and disrupt cross-border movement, impacting both nations’ trade and regional integration.
On 1 June 2026, the day before his departure, President Wadagni conducted his maiden international trip since inauguration, visiting Nigeria. The visit underscored the strategic importance of Nigeria as Bénin’s top commercial partner and a key neighbor in West Africa.
This diplomatic outreach reflects Bénin’s commitment to fostering stability and cooperation across the Sahel, despite recent political turbulence. The outcomes of these engagements are expected to shape future economic policies and regional alliances.
