High-level diplomatic engagement is reshaping Burkina Faso’s international partnerships, with a recent meeting in Ouagadougou underscoring new opportunities for collaboration with Serbia. On June 3, 2026, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, welcomed a Serbian parliamentary delegation led by Slavenko Ristic to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations.
The visit, part of a broader effort to expand diplomatic and economic ties, focused on key sectors such as defense, security, and professional training. As Ouagadougou continues to diversify its international alliances, Belgrade’s growing interest highlights a shared vision for deeper cooperation.

During the discussions, Slavenko Ristic, who also serves as CEO of Tehnicki Remont Bratunac, a defense technology firm, praised Burkina Faso’s current leadership and strategic direction under President Ibrahim Traoré. « The path chosen by the President of Faso resonates strongly in Serbia, where it is widely admired, » he remarked. He emphasized his country’s eagerness to play a more active role across Africa, stating, « Africa represents the future, and Serbia is determined to be part of that future. »
The Burkinabè diplomat reciprocated the enthusiasm, describing the visit as a clear indication of Serbia’s growing interest in Burkina Faso. He stressed that untapped potential exists in both nations for mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in areas where Serbia’s expertise could align with Burkina Faso’s evolving priorities.

Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré highlighted Burkina Faso’s ongoing policy of diversifying international partnerships, with a particular focus on countries in Eastern Europe. « We are actively seeking partners with whom we can build equitable, win-win relationships, » he explained. The minister also urged the Serbian delegation to help enhance European understanding of Africa’s realities, positioning Burkina Faso as a bridge between the two regions.
In response, Slavenko Ristic pledged to advocate for Burkina Faso and Africa within European decision-making circles, aiming to rebalance cooperation between the continents. The meeting reflects a broader shift in Ouagadougou’s foreign policy, as it seeks to strengthen strategic alliances beyond its traditional partnerships.
