Burkina Faso makes historic cuts to medicine prices

Burkina Faso implements major price reductions on pharmaceuticals and medical supplies

In a significant move to enhance public health, the government of Burkina Faso has announced a substantial decrease in the prices of essential generic medicines and various medical consumables. This new pricing structure is scheduled to take effect on March 1, 2026, and is supported by a government investment of 3 billion FCFA.

The decision was finalized during a Council of Ministers meeting on February 12, 2026. The price adjustments will apply to products distributed by the Centrale d’achat des médicaments essentiels génériques (CAMEG), with the primary goal of making healthcare more equitable and affordable for all citizens.

Details of the price reductions

According to the Minister of Health, Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, the price cuts will vary across different product categories. The most significant reductions include:

  • Up to 72.73% for certain medical consumables.
  • Up to 67.27% for some tablet-form medications.
  • Up to 53.47% for specific injectable products.
  • Up to 20% for various syrups and suspensions.

This initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain of healthcare costs on households, improve access to vital treatments, and foster greater equity in the provision of medical care across the nation.

This latest measure follows a previous price reduction in May 2025, which had a budgetary impact of approximately 5 billion FCFA. It reaffirms the authorities’ ongoing commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to every citizen in Burkina Faso.
