Strategic breakthrough: Cameroon and Turkey elevate defense partnership

On direct orders from President Paul Biya, Head of State and Supreme Commander of Cameroon’s Armed Forces, Minister Delegate to the Presidency in charge of Defense Joseph Beti Assomo has concluded a historic military and financial cooperation agreement with Turkish authorities in Ankara.

The landmark accord was signed by Cameroon’s Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo and his Turkish counterpart Yaşar Güler, with Vice-Minister Musa Heybet participating in the negotiations. Official statements confirm the agreement aims to strengthen financial and military cooperation frameworks while deepening bilateral principles of collaboration in areas of mutual strategic interest.

Beyond the signing ceremony, Minister Beti Assomo conducted an official visit to Turkey’s National Defense University (MSÜ), a premier institution for military leadership training. Discussions focused on three critical pillars: enhancing bilateral military cooperation, specialized training for Cameroonian Armed Forces personnel, and deepening the strategic relationship between both nations.

This visit builds on an already robust partnership. Turkey has been training Cameroonian military personnel at MSÜ facilities for several years. During Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler’s visit to Yaoundé in May 2025, Joseph Beti Assomo publicly acknowledged Ankara’s contribution through free training programs for Cameroonian cadets and non-commissioned officers in Turkish military academies.

The June 3, 2026 agreement marks a significant upgrade in this cooperation, elevating it to unprecedented financial and operational levels. Cameroon continues to diversify its strategic alliances, with Turkey now joining France, the United States, and Israel as a key military partner. This collaboration emphasizes training, financial support, and operational cooperation, positioning Ankara as a major defense ally for Yaoundé.
