Canada opens first embassy in Cotonou, marking a new chapter in Benin relations

Canada has launched its first full-fledged embassy in Cotonou, Benin, 64 years after establishing diplomatic relations with the West African nation. The inauguration ceremony, held on August 5, 2026, was led by Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who was on a working visit to Benin, alongside her Beninese counterpart Corinne Amori Brunet. The event also gathered key diplomatic figures, including Benin’s Economy and Finance Minister’s delegate for External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management, Hugues Oscar Lokossou.
The establishment of the embassy signifies a historic milestone in the Canada-Benin partnership, reflecting both nations’ shared vision to elevate their collaboration. This new diplomatic presence in Cotonou will streamline political dialogue, ensure closer monitoring of bilateral commitments, and strengthen cooperation across critical sectors such as security, trade, and human development.
« Canada is fully committed to working with Benin, and today, we are taking our relationship to a new level, » declared Foreign Minister Anand. Her Beninese counterpart echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the embassy’s opening symbolizes a deeper, more dynamic partnership. « Our cooperation is growing stronger, expanding into new areas like innovation, economic growth, security, and human development—values that both Benin and Canada hold dear, » stated Minister Amori Brunet.
Earlier that morning, the two foreign ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political and diplomatic consultations. This agreement establishes a structured framework for regular high-level exchanges, ensuring sustained progress on bilateral agreements and enhanced coordination on regional and global issues.
A broader working session followed, bringing together Benin’s Tourism and Foreign Trade Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, the Minister Delegate to the President for National Defense Gildas Agonkan, and Minister Lokossou. Together, they discussed strategies to accelerate collaboration in key areas, reinforcing the foundations of this renewed partnership.
