Canaries parliament honors Moroccan consul’s contributions
Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, welcomed Morocco’s Consul General in the Canary Islands, Fatiha El Kamouri, on Wednesday to mark the conclusion of her four-year term leading the consular representation in the archipelago.
During the meeting, Pérez expressed gratitude for El Kamouri’s dedicated service and emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation between the institutions. She also wished El Kamouri success in her future professional endeavors.
Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao for six years, where she actively engaged in institutional relations and supported the Moroccan community residing in the islands.
The positive impact of El Kamouri’s work on strengthening relations between the Canary Islands government—led by Fernando Clavijo—and Morocco has been widely recognized across the archipelago.
Clavijo’s unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara reflects a strategic alignment with Spanish state diplomacy. This goes beyond mere diplomatic courtesy, demonstrating a deep understanding of security, stability, and substantial economic and trade benefits.
Her contributions extended beyond visits to Morocco and the signing of collaboration agreements across multiple sectors. A notable example is the reception of a delegation from the Souss-Massa region in Las Palmas, led by Karim Achengli and over 80 business representatives, showcasing the shift from political discourse to tangible actions.
This institutional rapprochement underscores the Canary Islands’ emergence as a natural partner for Morocco’s development, rejecting divisive influences that previously strained relations across the region.
The collaboration spans key strategic sectors where the Canary Islands’ expertise in water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological research has found strong resonance in southern Morocco. Businesses in both regions are actively pursuing joint ventures, reinforcing mutual interests as the foundation for lasting peace and shared prosperity.
This transformation has been significantly driven by the efforts of Consul Fatiha El Kamouri over recent years.
