The leader of Chad’s Rassemblement pour la Justice et l’Égalité (RAJET), Ordjei Abderahim Chaha, has called on President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to show clemency toward imprisoned opposition figures from the former GCAP coalition and the Les Transformateurs party.
Democracy under threat, warns RAJET president
In a strongly worded open letter, Ordjei Abderahim Chaha argued that detaining opposition leaders “bitterly seasons” the nation’s democratic fabric and undermines the credibility of Chad’s judicial system. He stressed that embracing opposition dissent is not a sign of weakness but the hallmark of a mature political system, essential for a thriving democracy.
A plea for political inclusivity
The RAJET leader emphasized that political opposition is not an obstacle but a vital force that enriches democratic processes and safeguards political freedoms. He warned that suppressing opposition voices could turn democracy into “cold ashes” and pave the way for authoritarianism. His appeal to the president centered on the idea that releasing detained opposition figures would cement his legacy in the annals of Chadian democracy.
National dialogue as a path to peace
Ordjei Abderahim Chaha advocated for an inclusive national dialogue, describing it as a unifying force capable of fostering patriotism and healing societal divisions. He assured that imprisoned opposition leaders remain committed to this process, asserting that “true peace and progress emerge from such discussions.”
Beware of divisive influences
The political leader cautioned the president against advisors who stoke division and resentment, labeling them as “gravediggers of the Republic.” He accused certain reports and documents of being fabricated to justify unjust decisions, urging the head of state to reject such manipulations.
Concluding his appeal, Ordjei Abderahim Chaha demanded the immediate release of all detained opposition figures so they could participate in the national dialogue and help “mend the nation’s deep wounds.”
