Chad president defends security minister amid magistrates’ complaint

In response to a formal complaint filed by magistrates against the Minister of Public Security over remarks deemed disrespectful to the judiciary, Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has publicly sided with his cabinet member.

The Head of State emphasized the importance of free speech in a democratic system, stating that criticism—whether from citizens or public officials—must adhere to existing laws. ‘’Restricting criticism from those entrusted with public duties risks undermining the very foundations of our social contract,’’ he argued.

To distance himself from the judicial oversight process, the President announced his decision to no longer preside over the Superior Council of the Judiciary.

‘’It’s crucial to clarify that the Minister of Public Security did not condemn the justice system as a whole or all magistrates,’’ Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno stated in defense of his appointee. He acknowledged the role of trade unions in democracy but cautioned against justifying actions that conflict with the principles of justice and ethics.

Earlier, a widely circulated video showed the Minister sharply criticizing certain court rulings, calling them conducive to falsehood and vowing to ‘’tear up fake orders.’’
