The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development, and Housing presented the outcomes of Chad’s mission to Baku, Azerbaijan, during the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) on May 28, 2026. The briefing took place at the ministry’s headquarters, attended by key stakeholders who participated in the delegation.
The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the first deputy mayor of N’Djamena, representatives from the National Housing and Public Works Company (SOPROFIM), and officials from UN-Habitat. Discussions at the forum centered on housing challenges, sustainable urbanization, and building city resilience against climate change impacts.
Chad’s visibility boosted in global urban discussions
Participation in the forum enhanced Chad’s profile in international urban development conversations and positioned the country as an active voice in shaping Africa’s urban policies. A dedicated Chad exhibition stand showcased the nation’s flagship urban and housing initiatives, drawing attention from global partners.
UN-Habitat chief to assess Chad’s urban landscape
One of the major outcomes is the upcoming official visit by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, scheduled for September 9–11, 2026. This mission will assess Chad’s urban realities and review priority projects proposed by national authorities, paving the way for targeted support.
Chad gains access to critical climate funding
The minister announced Chad’s inclusion among the top ten countries eligible for the UN Green Climate Fund, following a collaborative initiative with Kenya. This milestone unlocks potential financing for urban resilience projects, particularly flood mitigation efforts in vulnerable areas.
New partnerships to modernize cities and neighborhoods
Side discussions with Kenya and Morocco resulted in agreements to launch joint initiatives in urban planning, social housing, and informal settlement upgrading. These partnerships will include knowledge-sharing missions and joint projects to improve living conditions in underserved communities.
A step toward sustainable urban growth
The minister emphasized that these developments mark a turning point for Chad, offering tangible pathways to transform urban challenges into structured, inclusive, and resilient development projects. This aligns with the government’s commitment to advancing the President’s vision of equitable urban progress across the country.
