Chadian judges file complaint against public security minister

The executive boards of the Chadian Magistrates’ Union (SMT) and the Autonomous Chadian Magistrates’ Union (SYAMAT) have formally lodged a complaint against the Minister of Public Security and Immigration, Ali Ahmat Aghabache, with the Prosecutor General at the N’Djamena Court of Appeal.

Alleged attacks on judicial dignity and integrity

The unions claim that the minister’s actions have seriously undermined the dignity of the judiciary and the respect owed to magistrates. Their complaint follows public remarks made by Ali Ahmat Aghabache on May 24, 2026, which were widely circulated online and condemned by legal professionals.

Legal grounds for the complaint

The magistrates argue that the minister’s statements constitute serious violations of public discrediting of judicial and jurisdictional acts, as well as acts of contempt and defamation against a constituted body. Their legal argument is based on specific provisions of the Chadian Penal Code (Articles 142, 144, and following) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (Articles 527 and 528).

Calls for judicial accountability

The unions have urged the Prosecutor General to initiate a formal judicial investigation, pursue all legal avenues, and uphold the dignity, independence, and authority of the judiciary. They seek to ensure that such attacks on the justice system do not go unaddressed.
