Congo RDC and Congo Brazzaville leaders advance key economic integration projects

Democratic Republic of the Congo President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo concluded a working visit to Brazzaville on July 3, deepening bilateral ties with Congolese counterpart Denis Sassou N’Guesso.

The Congolese head of state arrived aboard the Majestic River, a vessel flying the DRC flag, crossing the Pool Malebo before being welcomed at Brazzaville’s Beach by Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso.

The visit underscores the ongoing commitment between President Sassou N’Guesso and President Tshisekedi to strengthen economic cooperation and accelerate high-impact integration initiatives.

A major focus of their discussions was the Brazzaville-Kinshasa road-rail bridge project, a transformative infrastructure linking Africa’s two closest capital cities. This landmark project will enhance cross-border movement of people and goods while boosting trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.

The leaders also emphasized energy collaboration, particularly the Energy Friendship Loop, a regional initiative to interconnect electrical grids and improve power supply for economic growth. A formal agreement was signed to formalize this interconnection, including plans for a massive hydroelectric dam on the Likouala aux Herbes River with a projected capacity of 12,900 megawatts. This tripartite endeavor involving Congo, the DRC, and Angola aims to position Central Africa as a key energy producer.

Beyond economic matters, Presidents Sassou N’Guesso and Tshisekedi addressed regional security challenges and stability in the Great Lakes and Central Africa. They reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue and strengthened cooperation to safeguard peace, a cornerstone for sustainable development in both nations and the broader subregion.
