Ivorian opposition leader Assalé Tiémoko Antoine summoned for judicial questioning
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire — Assalé Tiémoko Antoine, president of the political movement Aujourd’hui et Demain, la Côte d’Ivoire (Adci), has been officially summoned to appear before the senior investigating judge at the Abidjan Court of First Instance. The news was confirmed in an official statement from the Adci’s National Executive Bureau, signed by Executive Secretary Roger Youan.
The summoning follows a coordinated legal procedure initiated by the Abidjan police headquarters, which notified Assalé’s legal representatives on May 12, 2026. The following day, the Ivorian politician personally collected the formal summons at the police headquarters, signing a receipt acknowledging its official delivery. He is required to present himself before the investigating judge on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 8:00 AM.
The Adci statement highlights that this judicial development comes just days after an incident on the evening of May 11, 2026, when Assalé Tiémoko Antoine was reportedly prevented from boarding a flight to Canada. The party claims the incident occurred without any formal justification being provided, describing the situation as an attempt to obstruct his political activities.
Political backdrop and legal maneuvering
In response to the summoning, the Adci has urged its members and supporters to maintain calm and continue mobilizing across Côte d’Ivoire and internationally. The party also emphasized its commitment to expanding its national footprint, despite the legal pressure.
Prior to being notified of the judicial summons, Assalé Tiémoko Antoine had already taken proactive legal steps. He sent a formal letter to the Republic’s Prosecutor requesting clarification regarding his legal status, a move seen as part of a broader strategy to address ongoing judicial uncertainties.
Election ambitions amid judicial scrutiny
The timing of this legal development is significant, as Assalé Tiémoko Antoine has recently declared his candidacy for the 2028 municipal elections in the Cocody district of Abidjan. His high-profile political engagement, combined with the judicial scrutiny, underscores the tense political climate in Côte d’Ivoire ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
The Adci has framed the summoning as politically motivated, emphasizing that their leader has consistently complied with legal procedures while remaining committed to democratic participation. The party continues to assert that the legal actions against its president are part of a wider strategy to undermine its growing influence.
