Oil sector expansion plans

During a high-level meeting in Yaoundé with Cameroon’s Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, Dangote Group’s Vice President for Oil and Gas, Devakumar Edwin, outlined ambitious plans to invest in petroleum storage and transportation infrastructure. The proposed project aims to address Cameroon’s growing energy infrastructure needs while supporting the nation’s expanding construction sector.

The Nigerian conglomerate, already a major player in Cameroon’s cement industry through its Douala plant, now seeks to leverage its expertise in large-scale infrastructure development to bolster the country’s oil sector capabilities.

Cement production boost

In addition to oil sector investments, Dangote Group reaffirmed its commitment to doubling cement production capacity at its Douala facility. This expansion comes as Cameroon’s construction industry experiences robust growth, creating increased demand for building materials.

Strategic energy partnership

The announcement follows the National Refining Company of Cameroon (Sonara)’s ongoing transformation after a devastating fire at its sole refinery in May 2019. While Sonara undergoes reconstruction estimated at 700 billion FCFA to restore its operational capacity, Dangote’s proposed oil infrastructure investments could provide immediate support to Cameroon’s energy supply chain.

The Cameroonian government faces a delicate balancing act: leveraging Dangote’s financial resources and operational expertise to stabilize the petroleum products market in the short term, while ensuring the Sonara reconstruction project maintains its strategic importance for the country’s long-term energy independence.
