Jihadist coalition claims responsibility

The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-aligned faction, asserted control over the base in a public declaration. Their statement alleged a «total seizure of a Malian army barracks in San, Ségou region, early Sunday morning.» This incident follows a July 18 attack where at least fifty soldiers died after their convoy was ambushed by a combined force of JNIM fighters and independent Tuareg separatists from the Azawad Liberation Front—one of the deadliest strikes against government troops in recent years.
