On July 27, Libreville became the epicenter of Gabon’s digital future, where top officials gathered to address the nation’s telecommunication challenges. Recognizing the limitations of traditional infrastructure, the government is turning to satellite technology as a cornerstone for economic growth and national resilience. The high-level seminar, inaugurated by Mark-Alexandre Doumba, Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation, brought together key figures including Aboubakar Mambimba Ndjoungui of the Gabonese Space Agency (Ageos) and Alberto Wenceslas Mounguengui Moudoki of the National Authority for Digital Infrastructure (Aninf).
Building resilience through space-based connectivity
The government’s strategy hinges on leveraging satellite connectivity to reduce reliance on foreign networks, enhance cybersecurity, and ensure seamless communication across Gabon’s vast and often inaccessible terrain. Doumba emphasized the urgency of these investments, stating, « The decisions we make today in digital and space infrastructure will shape our sovereignty for generations.»
Overcoming geographic barriers with hybrid connectivity
With nearly 88% of Gabon covered in dense rainforest, traditional fiber-optic deployment is impractical in many regions. The new approach combines terrestrial networks with satellite solutions to bridge the digital divide. This hybrid model aims to deliver reliable internet access to rural communities, coastal areas, and remote locations, where connectivity has long been a challenge.
As Ndjoungui highlighted, the goal extends beyond mere access: «The vision is simple—enable a farmer in the interior to schedule a telemedicine appointment with a specialist in Libreville as effortlessly as placing a local call.»
Laying the groundwork for a national space ecosystem
Participants at the seminar are refining a roadmap that includes regulatory frameworks, data protection measures, and cybersecurity protocols. The outcome will be a strategic report submitted to the President, outlining steps to establish Gabon as a leader in Africa’s space sector. This initiative positions Gabon to pioneer sustainable digital transformation in Central Africa.
