Gabon tightens controls on sardine and ‘sans nom’ fish exports

The Gabonese government has implemented stricter measures to safeguard local fish supplies, announcing a temporary halt on sardine (Ethmalosa fimbriata) and « sans nom » (Heterotis niloticus) exports across the country. Effective since March 26, 2026, this decision was formalized through two official decrees from the Ministry of Sea, Fisheries, and Blue Economy, published in the Official Gazette on April 16, 2026. The move addresses a growing shortage in domestic markets, as these fish species continue to be shipped to neighboring countries, particularly through border areas like Cocobeach, prompting authorities to prioritize local consumption.
