Each year, millions of faithful journey to Touba for the Grand Magal, but this pilgrimage season has brought an unexpected burden: exorbitant transport prices. At the Baux Maraîchers station in Pikine, the usual fare of 3,000 to 5,000 francs has ballooned to 8,000 to 10,000 francs, depending on seating preferences and climate control.

Peak demand fuels price surges

Fallou, a local agent at the station, explains the situation: “All these vehicles head to Touba. You can choose between a small non-air-conditioned car at 10,000 francs or a slightly larger air-conditioned bus at 8,000 francs. These are today’s prices—traffic on the Touba route is brutal.”

Mamadou, a lifelong pilgrim, faces the dilemma every year. “They hike prices with every event,” he laments. “Touba isn’t far, and normal fares are much lower. Times are hard—this is exploitation. I have to pay because my family awaits me, and we must welcome our guests.”

Logistics and fuel costs drive fare increases

Bour Guewel, a veteran driver with nearly three decades of experience, offers another perspective: “Going to Touba, buses are packed. But returning? Finding passengers is a struggle, even after filling up with diesel twice.” The congestion around Touba forces drivers to “raise fares to offset the losses.”

Public transport operator Dakar Dem Dikk offers fares at 4,000 francs, but demand far outstrips supply. Their buses also restrict luggage space, adding frustration for pilgrims carrying essentials for the spiritual gathering.
