Sunni Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo was taken into custody by security forces on Tuesday in Ouagadougou, just days after he publicly voiced concerns over a proposed law on religious freedoms. His apprehension has since ignited tensions and led to public demonstrations across the Burkinabè capital.
Tensions rise during Ouagadougou arrest
Sources close to Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo, along with the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB), confirm his arrest on Tuesday afternoon. The operation involved masked police and military personnel. The timing of the arrest, occurring on the eve of the Muslim holiday of Eid, escalated already existing tensions between security forces and worshippers present at the scene. Associates of the imam reported multiple injuries sustained during the apprehension. The current whereabouts of the religious leader remain undisclosed.
Criticism against a legislative proposal
Two days prior to his detention, an audio recording widely shared across social media platforms featured the imam vocalizing his opposition to a draft bill. This legislation, passed in March, aims to regulate the exercise of religious freedoms within Burkina Faso. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo issued a strong caution to authorities against any potential move to prohibit prayers in public spaces. He further urged the nation’s leaders to “reflect more deeply on the implications of their actions before proceeding.”
Protest dispersed by security forces
Hours following the arrest, hundreds of individuals gathered in Ouagadougou, demanding the immediate release of the influential imam. Eyewitness accounts describe security forces dispersing the crowd using tear gas. In response to the escalating situation, the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina appealed to Muslim faithful for “calm, restraint, and serenity” amidst the unrest in the capital.
