Senegal’s credit rating dips as thierno alassane sall criticizes “fratricidal war”

Dégradation de la note du Sénégal : Alassane Sall fustige «la guerre fratricide» Diomaye-Sonko
On August 28, 2026, the credit rating agency Moody’s reduced Senegal’s sovereign rating from Caa1 to Caa2. This downgrade was attributed to significant refinancing pressures and the prolonged absence of a formal program with the International Monetary Fund (FMI).

However, Deputy Thierno Alassane Sall, who also leads the République des Valeurs (RV) party, contends that this economic downturn stems from an «irresponsible fratricidal war» raging between President Diomaye Faye and his former political mentor, Ousmane Sonko.

In a strongly worded statement, Thierno Alassane Sall asserted, «It comes as no surprise that Senegal’s rating has once again been lowered by Moody’s. This decline is partly due to the irresponsible fratricidal conflict waged by the ill-named “Kiiraay” and “Pastef” factions, between Diomaye and Sonko. This is precisely whom the Senegalese people can hold accountable for the worsening of their living conditions, the intensification of their hardships, and the widespread social distress they endure.»

Furthermore, the prominent deputy urged citizens to «remember, during upcoming elections, the accountability and, crucially, the heedlessness of both the executive and Parliament in the face of the challenges they confront,» advocating for their collective removal from power.

This latest rating downgrade coincides with ongoing discussions in Dakar between an FMI mission and the Senegalese government, aiming to establish a new financial program.
