Two matches, two goals! After opening the World Cup with a strike against Brazil, Ismaël Saïbari delivered again against Scotland. A thunderous shot under the crossbar just two minutes into the game proved to be the only goal, virtually securing Morocco’s place in the round of 16. With four points from two games and a manageable final group match against Haiti, the Atlas Lions are almost guaranteed to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
Morocco’s success so far owes much to their in-form attacker. After showing finesse to beat Alisson Becker against Brazil, Saïbari showcased his raw power with a missile that left the Scottish goalkeeper with no chance.
It was an exceptional day for the PSV Eindhoven striker as news broke that he is set to join Bayern Munich for a record €55 million transfer. The deal, though not officially confirmed, has been widely anticipated.
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi had already spoken about the impending move before the match: “We are very proud when Moroccan players join big clubs, and Bayern Munich certainly is one. The player remains calm and focused. Bayern have not been aggressive in their communication, so everything is going smoothly. He is fully concentrated on playing for Morocco. I am fortunate to know Vincent Kompany well, and he understands that the national team is the priority right now. We are very serene and will be proud when it is official, because we want our best Moroccan players at the highest level.”
